The Power of Low Cost Airlines for the Economy of the Base Country
The Creation of SILKJET and its Impact for Uzbekistan
Low cost airlines (LCC) can double or even triple the number of passengers traveling to and from a country as observed from the world practices in other countries. Lower fares broaden the access to travel for a greater part of the population. Low cost carriers have gained popularity around the world, with virtually every third passenger being transported by LCCs around the world. This has taken off due to the affordability and the ease of travel provided to the public. In addition, these airlines create a social value by promoting affordable travel that stimulates and grows passenger flow and tourism development.
As the name suggests, low cost airlines maintain a very strict cost management discipline, which gives them a much lower unit cost (cost per available seat kilometer – CASK) than other carriers. This is achieved through using single type sistership fleet with majority economy class seat cabin configuration and strict principles such as high aircraft utilization, which requires new and more reliable aircraft and more efficient utilization of crews.
In addition, LCCs sell a ticket to the passenger, which includes only a flight and one carry-on luggage. If check in baggage, seat selection, inflight meal, etc., are required, these options can be purchased separately. Thus, passengers do not have to pay for services that they do not always need. If a passenger makes an online check-in for flight, the airline's expenses for paying the check-in counter at the airport are reduced. All of the listed above items allow LCCs to afford lower fares.
Uzbekistan has lagged behind the general global trend of accelerated growth of low cost airlines, with almost 0% market share of LCCs today. SILKJET can be the catalyst in the country to grow the market and bring the share to more than 37%. SILKJET aspires to be the LCC leader in the region with a base in Uzbekistan. Company will open new services to destinations that are not served at this time. Attracting foreign aviation investors, as well as top management with extensive experience in launching low-cost airlines, will create the most efficient airline that can be competitive in the world market and redirect part of the Europe-Asia passenger traffic from the largest Middle East hubs to Uzbekistan.
